It’s Gone All Shark Week Up In Here!

Moogly has this awesomeness to share with the world and I’m totally gonna try it. The biggest reason I’m taking on this one (Eventually. I’m still fighting with my current project) is the zipper. How do you put a zipper in a knitted/crocheted purse or pouch or whatever?! Especially when you don’t have a sewing machine! I need to know!

No. Wait. There’s YouTube.

Ruffle Scarves on a Hook!

Whilst my momma visited during the holidays she made me two ruffle scarves. They are frikkin awesome! I don’t know if they keep me warm so much as they make a great prop for impromptu cabaret dancing. *Insert the entire Chicago soundtrack here*

Mom tried to get me to knit my own but I’m having a torrid love affair with crochet right now so we came to an impasse.

” You can’t crochet ruffle scarves.” she sniffed haughtily.

Au contraire mon frère! Got this video in my Micheal’s mailer by email last week! I have not tried it myself but it looks like the same results as knitting and not too difficult. I’ma buy me some sashay yarn and give this a go to prove the ole gal wrong.

*Forehead Slap So Hard*

Just finished all the pieces for the latest hat I’m working on and it wasn’t until just now that I realized I half double crocheted the whole damn thing instead of the double crochet the pattern called for.

Yes, it’s still a hat. Yes, it still looks cute. But damn it all! I know its wrong! I know!

I’ll have all the pieces assembled and pics up shortly…grrr….

Reverse Single Crochet! Why Do You Hate Me?!

Psst. Com’ere.

So I have not been posting pics of my latest project because it’s a Christmas gift for my bestie and in the spirit of the holiday it will be a surprise. Which is why we are speaking in hushed tones now.

But you know what’s not a surprise? Do ya? It’s that I would have issues with the damn thing when I’m trying to get it sent out before Christmas! That’s the way it goes doesn’t it? EVERY TIME!

Reverse single crochet looks easy but for the life of me I can figure it out. What I’m doing does NOT look like this.

I’m supposed to be doing it in the front loops only…does that make a difference? It doesn’t matter. I’m just going with it because what I’m doing doesn’t look bad it just doesn’t look right. I’ll post picks after the new year. In the meantime I’m deciding what my next endeavor will be! So exciting!

The Aussies Have it In Spades!

For the last week I have been struggling to get this to work…

Rnd 1: 8 sc into 2 ch from hk, sl st into 1st sc to join. (8 sts)

Cause If I could just get that then it opens a plethora of hat patterns I can tackle. FINALLY! It’s all clear thanks to Paula Daniele – the Crochet Designer, Teacher and Video Producer of the Crochet Hooks You Youtube Channel and Website. She’s the most amazing teacher! Not too quick, soothing voice, and great patterns she designed herself.

Remember that baby hat I crocheted a few posts ago? That was hers. And I’m learning some new moves with an octagonal coaster from this installment. If you’re learning and need some help, this is your gal!

I Still Don’t Get It But…

There I was sitting in my living room with a book of crochet patterns trying to figure out how the deuce to make heads or tails of the instructions. I was staring some of the “beginner” projects for over an hour and let me tell you, I’ve read calculus problems that made more sense than that noise.

EX: The first line of the baby hat pattern I tried from goes like this. Rnd 1: Ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with a sl st in first sc.

I don’t see how that translates to a circle type pattern I was expecting from the picture. I just kept getting jumbled messes and had to cut horrible knots off my yarn before trying again. I don’t take defeat easily. Today is my day off and I’d damned if I didn’t have something to show for my efforts! So I found whole project videos on!!!! I thought they would just show how to do a single type of stitch, but no! They have whole projects! There were tons but I really like hats so I went with this lady.

Love this woman! Love her! I’d kiss her face if she were here! It took me a few hours but I made my first crocheted newborn beanie! Can I get a “what, what”? I’m so proud. My success was not without some set backs though. Look at this.

I clearly screwed up my rounds. Looking back I think I didn’t do the slip stitches right as I moved to the next round. But I just wanted to finish something to build my confidence, you know? I can’t help but think those gaps shouldn’t be there at all either…I’ll try again and see what happens.

I still have no idea no idea how to read a pattern though. I think knitting patterns make more sense on paper but don’t translate well when I execute it. Crochet is the exact opposite.

Oh well! Vive la Crochet!

Edges of Madness!

Oook…seriously, I’m going to make a hat next. I just wanted to try one more swatch to see if I could keep the edges from decreasing. I did a single crochet stitch to the very end this time and I think this is how it should look…right?

I’m gonna eat a pumpkin donut and try not to freak out on my hooks now.

PS: Why is it only Tuesday?! I thought it was Wednesday when I woke up and was all excited cause tomorrow would be Halloween. Arrrrrrgh! (You can’t see it but I’m totally making angry zombie jazz hands of doom and anger right now. Might be why my stitches aren’t coming out correctly…)

All the Single Crochet! *all the single crochet*!

I can’t stand Beyoncé but whenever I hear or see the term “single crochet”, her song pops on my head and then I’m all like…

If you like it then you shoulda put a hook in it! Oh oh oh…! and so on.

Ok! SO! Single crochet means going through BOTH loops when you’re working across! Riiiight!

Good news? Got that DOWN! *high five!*

Bad news? The edges of my swatch are angled! Grrrrr….why?!

Forget this noise with swatches. Ima start making hats and see where that takes me. I love hats! Love them!

I’m Taking on Crochet!

Yesterday I fell pray the siren call of crochet in Michael’s. I used my 40% off coupon and bought the kit. Can’t beat it for $8! Then! Went across the street to Joann’s to take advantage of their Halloween sales. Grabbed some wool blends and salivated over some beautiful craft stations I want when I’m big and tall.

But I’m gonna give it try. Taught myself the single crochet stitch last night. You can see the results in my pic up there. I hope it’s right.

Can’t decide if it’s easier than knitting yet but it sure is fun!
